  • Bi-feed Downspout Examples

With the our many years of experience, we have installed gutters on hundred of residential and commercial properties. If there's a roof, we can find a way to put a gutter on it.

Bi-feed downspouts are a technique we use in two situations:

    1. Our customer wants to limit the number of downspouts for aesthetic reasons;
    2. Unusual or tricky roof designs prevent us from being able to install a downspout to drain a particular length of gutter.
  • Continuous Gutters - No Runs, No Drips, No Errors

Ed Steffen in his favorite Red Sox cap.Ed Steffen in his favorite Red Sox cap.Our owner, Ed Steffen, is a huge Boston Red Sox fan. He's never been to Boston, but just loves the team. You'll usually find him wearing his Red Sox cap. Funny how the Red Sox Nation captures people's attention. He's pretty keen on the Seattle Mariners, too.

So baseball references and metaphors are not lost on us. Working with gutters, our goal is to provide the best defense possible -- "no runs, no drips, no errors."

There are some situations where the best course of action with a gutter installation is to create a continuous gutter system, carrying the water around the entire roof structure. This makes sense, for example, if the side area or backyard has drainage issues. We want prevent water from draining from the roof into that area and move it away from the home or commercial stucture.

The first example here is a residential installation. Because of the overhang, rather than create three, separate gutters and drainspouts, we created one, continous gutter that drains down to one downspout.

The second example is a deck overhang that was

  • Dealing with Decks and Overhangs

Capitol Gutter installed this downspout to carry water away from this deck to prevent flooding and foundation problems.Capitol Gutter installed this downspout to carry water away from this deck to prevent flooding and foundation problems. With our wet, rainy season in the winter months in South Puget Sound, homeowners sometimes discover roof drainage problems that can not just become an inconvenience, but can actually cause damage to the home.

This local homeowner had a two-fold problem. The deck on this home is built on a platform so that it would be accessible from the main level of the home. This is a fairly common design in our landscape because many homes are built in hilly areas.  When it rained, runoff from the roof would overflow onto the deck, making it difficult to enter and exit the home, and also causing water to permeate the soil next to the foundation. Over time, this could cause foundation

  • Downspout Puzzle - Aestheics vs. Function

This downspout required two elbow joints to run down and meet with the deck support post. This downspout required two elbow joints to run down and meet with the deck support post.Sometimes we get thrown for a loop with an unusual gutter situation and have to come up with a unique solution. Here's an Olympia downspout installation that required a compromise between aethetics and functionality.

The gutter above this covered deck needed a downspout, but we didn't want to drop the downspout where it would obstruct the view. While we could run the downspout behind the support post for the roof, the support for the deck below did not line up. We knew that if we ran the downspout straight to the ground it would be unsupported and like to be accidentally bumped loose. So we built an elbow joint to run the downpout over to the support post and down to the ground.

You might wonder why we didn't create a right angle, rather than a diagonal slope. In order for water and debris to drain properly, there needs to be a slope. Again,

  • Drain System Idea for Downspout Run-Off

We spotted this idea on Pinterestand thought it would be good to share. This concrete gully carries water from the gutter downspout away from the home, providing a durable alternative to a long, aluminum gutter extension. This concrete gully carries water from the gutter downspout away from the home, providing a durable alternative to a long, aluminum gutter extension. (original photo link)

We install gutter systems for homes, including downspouts, throughout South Puget Sound and the Olympia area, but there are limitations with downspout extensions to carry water farther away from a home. Most notably, if we install a long aluminum extension, it is prone to being damaged by being accidentally stepped on, hit with a lawn mower, or even snowed on. It also doesn't blend into landscaping very well.

Rather than use a long downspout extension, an alternative is to build a small gully to carry the water away. This can be done using off-the-shelf parts from a home improvement store,

  • Example of Poor Downspout and Drainage

A gutter system is a cruicial part of your home that collects the water captured by your roof. Without it, rain runs off of your roof, splashes against your house and erodes the ground. Over time, this can result in permature wear and damage to your siding, erosion of your landscaping, and potentially even flooding of your basement or crawl space and damage to the foundation of your home.

However, just as important as collecting the water from your roof is carrying the water away from the perimeter of your house.

The picture below, which we found at givemetalk.com, demonstrates how NOT to handle the runoff coming from a downspout. In this photo, water is being collected into a shallow pool of gravel. While this may prevent the water from splashing and eroding the immediate area around the downspout, it doesn't address the distribution of runoff. It's like putting a funnel in a cup and then pouring a gallon of water through: the cup overflows and the water has nowhere to go. The end effect: water will oversaturate the soil underneath the gravel, destabilizing the soil and potentially flooding the crawlspace. Over time, it could even damage the home's foundation.

  • Garage Overhang Problem Solved

Gutter installed over garage door to prevent rain from leeching into the garage.Gutter installed over garage door to prevent rain from leaching into the garage. The vast majority of gutter installations we do in the Olympia area are traditional gutters attached to the overhang of a roof. However, we can think outside the box and come up with solutions for unusual situations.

The garage in this multi-family apartment building frequently got wet during the rainy season because, being so high up, the overhang did not reach far enough beyond the building.  So every time there was a hard rain, water would cascade down the side of the building and leach into the garage.

After the building owner installed a painted 2x4 as a base, we installed a gutter and downspout above the garage door to catch the rain and carry it safely away from the entrance.

Capitol Gutter installs gutter systems on all kinds of structures, from residential homes and apartment buildings to commercial offices and industrial sites. Whatever your needs, please

  • Gutter Color Transition To Match House

Here's an option we can provide that offers a slightly different look for a gutter installation. Most times, people will use a single gutter color, either to match the color of their home's exterior or the color of the trim. But it's also possible to do both by using two different colors of gutters.

In this example, the home is an olive green, but the trim is white. To complement the trim, the customer chose white gutters. However, they wanted the downspouts to blend in. To accomplish this, we

  • Raised Eve Requires a Unique, Dual Downspout Gutter Solution

We created this dual gutter system with merged downspouts for this unique roofline. We created this dual gutter system with merged downspouts for this unique roofline. We can handle just about any kind of unusual gutter scenario you can throw at us. Here's a home with an oddly placed window and an eve very close to the edge of the front wall.

Becuase of the odd shape of the roof, rainwater was being funneled down right on top of the cars in front of the garage.

If you look closely (sorry the picture is a little blurry), you'll see how we solved this unique situation. We placed gutters on both sides of the window, added downspouts to both, and joined the downspouts together to carry water to the edge of house and off of the driveway.

We love challenges like these. They're like big water puzzles and the reward is a happy customer!

Whether you have a simple, straightforward job or something that's a real head-scratcher, we'll install the gutters and find a professional solution that works.

  • Retaining Water from Your Downspout

irrigation-barrelRainwater collection system using off the shelf parts.  Click here for original Pinterest photo. Here is a cool idea we saw on Pinterest.  This nifty setup captures rainwater from a downspout into a water barrel made form a plastic garbage can so that it can be used for irrigation.  This might work a little better in climates where there is more rain in the summer months, but with all the rain we receive 8 months of the year, why not retain some of that water for irrigation.

This idea caught my eye because it uses off the shelf parts, and also uses the weight of the water itself to create pressure in the hose.  It's kind of like a mini water tower.  As long as the water barrel is higher than the surrounding area, this would work just fine.

With dozens of colors to choose from, we can match just about any house color, eve or trim. One of the options we can offer when installing gutters is transitional colors. By changing the color of downspouts to match the trim or house color, the gutter system blends in better. This is a personal preference, but some people prefer the aethetics of gutters that match the adjacent colors.

This Centralia home is an excellent example. In this case, we used three colors: black, classic cream and buckskin brown. The home is a cream color, the trim on the eves is brown, and the window trim

  • Tricky Gazebo Downspout

Custom-designed downspout for gazebo. Click the photo for larger view.Custom-designed downspout for gazebo. Click the photo for larger view. Here's another one of those tricky situations where we had to create a customized downspout. This gazebo near Tenino needed gutters because when it rained, the run-off was splashing inside the covered area. It was also eroding the soil and over time could have damaged the concrete slab.

Since there are no walls like on a house, we needed to attach the downspouts to the support beams. However, as you can see in the picture, the support beams do not have any open sides where we could directly run a gutter down to the ground.

Our solution was to create custom elbow joints to wrap around one of the cross beams. We chose this location because the downspouts would be better protects and less likely to be damaged than if we'd run them along the outside profile of the support beams. We also didn't want to cover up the metal brackets that hold the structure together, so was just as much

Occasionally we run into unusual situations, like this one at Capital Vision Christian Church, where our goal is to adapt an existing, working gutter system to resolve flooding and overflow issues.

The church had an area along the back of their building that, due to the junction of two roof structures, would overflow and flood the ground. Because of the incorrect slope of the existing gutters, water would flow backwards into the corner, rather than away

Click the image for a larger view. Here is a little job we did as a donation for the Hands on Children's Museum in Olympia. They needed to carry water away from the street and into a collection area in their outdoor park. This is a fun little project because we not only solved their drainage problem, but the kids can see how water flows. The outdoor gardens around the museum building have water features so this little gutter system fits right in.
