  • Capitol Gutter Is The Cure for Junkophopia

Junkophobia is a common condition suffered by homeowners when they hire a contractor. What is it? It's the fear associated with contractors not cleaning up after themselves when they finish a job. We're talking about the sawdust and staples left behind by a handyman. The sticks and rocks left behind the house by a landscaper. And the dirt, leaves and other debris left behind after cleaning a roof and gutters.

We're not saying that all contractors do this. There are many that are neat and tidy and do a thorough job cleaning up after themselves. But the last thing you want to do is spend your hard-earned money on roof and gutter cleaning and be left with filth strewn all over your yard. It's not only unsightly, but it's also dangerous because roof debris can include things like nails and staples that roofers left behind or became dislodged from your roof. Gutter removal and installation also can leave behind metal fasteners that can cause havoc if you run over them with a lawnmower, or worse, if a child steps on one.

At Capitol Gutter, we pride ourselves on our "no junk" policy. We will always clean up after ourselves and leave your property in better condition than when we arrived. After your roof and gutter cleaning, or gutter installation, we will clean up everything that reaches the ground. Since we only hand-clean roofs and never pressure wash (which is bad for your roof, by the way), we generally don't make a big mess to begin with. But we will make

  • Clean Your Roof for Mother's Day!

Roof cleaning for Mother's DaySo here's a novel idea for Mother's Day... Why not have your roof and gutters cleaned? Think of how happy Mom will be when she comes home to a sparkling clean house free of moss and pine needles.  While you're at it, get your kids to mow the lawn and make the yard look all fresh and clean for spring.  The winter weather in the Olympia area can leave your house really grungy, so giving your house a good exterior spring cleaning will really brighten her day.

Okay, okay... maybe this isn't exactly what Mom is expecting for Mother's Day, but you could make it part of a package deal.  While Mom is away from the house, have us clean the roof and gutters while you clean the yard (or we're happy to recommend a good landscaper.  Then vacuum the house and make her a nice dinner with flowers on the table.

I'll do this for my wife Darla and I'll let you know how it goes!

  • Moss Build-Up on Roofs Common in Thurston County

Moss build-up and removal on Thurston County homeThurston County, and South Puget Sound in general, are one of the most beautiful places in the country to live because of the lush, green forests.  However, one of the side-effects that homeowners have to deal with is moss buildup on their roofs.  The cool, damp winters and shade from our thick forests are an ideal environment for moss to grow.

Here's an example of a roof on a Thurston County.  It's hard to see in the Before picture, but the roof was actually in very good condition and just needed a good cleaning.

  • Pressure Washing Is Bad for Your Roof

One area of debate with roof cleaning is the use of pressure washers to remove debris.  There are many roof cleaning companies out there that use pressure washing because it's a fast way to loosen moss and dirt build-up with less manual labor.

While roofs are designed to shed water, they are not designed for the high-intensity blast of fine water spray from a pressure washer.  Gas-powered pressure washers are particularly bad because they produce a higher-pressure output.  Pressure washing can damage both tile and shake roofs and cause unnecessary wear and tear.  Water can also be forced under tiles and joints and compromise the roof, causing leaks.  Pressure washing can also cause tabbed roof tiles to not sit down property, which leaves pockets for mold, fungus and moss to grow more readily.

At Capitol Gutter, we NEVER use pressure washers.  We always carefully clean your roof by hand.  We value your investment in your home and treat your roof just like we would treat our own.

  • September 2015 Update: We Are Swamped!

Ed Steffen, owner of Capitol GutterChange in Seasons Brings a Change in Our Services

It's almost fall. The nights are getting a bit nippy and trees are showing a tinge of color. The Seahawks have played their first game of the season (they'll do better next week against the Packers!) and the days are getting noticeably shorter.

Of course, that means the leaves will be falling and the inevitable winter rainy season is soon to follow. For us, that means many, many previous customers calling to prepare their roofs and gutters for winter with a fall cleaning.

While roof and gutter cleaning is a big part of our business, so is our commitment to remaining a small, family-owned and operated business. We are fanatical about customer service and quality of workmanship, and from day one we decided we want to keep our business in the family.

Quite frankly, we are swamped. We have cleaning appointments scheduled many weeks in advance and we do not want to overcommit or underperform, because quality and customer experience are everything to us.

  • What's On Your Honey Do List?

Ah yes... springtime!Well, it's that time of year again.  Hard to tell from the weather here in the Olympia area the past few days, but it's actually springtime.  That means gradually warming temperatures, bulbs germinating, grass (and weeds and moss) starting to grow, and occasionally even seeing that big orange disc in the sky.

It also means it's time to put together your "honey-do" list for the spring to bring the exterior of your house back into condition after the cold, dark, wet winter.

In case your having a hard time getting your list started, here are a few items on our list to jog your memory:
